Importance of: Mouth and Body Connection

Did you know that the health of your mouth is directly related to the health of your body? The mouth body connection is an important one. Periodontal disease – also known as gum disease – has been linked to a number of health problems that extend far beyond your mouth.

Many adults have some form of periodontal disease. It is caused by bacteria in the mouth which can combine with mucus and other particles in the mouth to form plaque on your teeth. In turn, this sticky, colorless plaque can harden and form “tartar” that can’t be removed by brushing. The longer plaque and tartar remain on your teeth, the more harmful they can become to your dental health, and potentially your overall health.

Symptoms of gum disease include:

• Red or swollen gums
• Tender or bleeding gums
• Painful chewing
• Loose teeth
• Sensitive teeth
• Receding gums or longer appearing teeth
• Bad breath that won’t go away

The wonderful news is that periodontal disease is a thoroughly preventable and largely fixable condition. Our office recommends daily brushing and flossing, and regular twice-yearly cleaning by our gentle and thorough dental hygienists.
